Fulcrum Surf X ISA World Games

The Daily Froth
“Olympians in October”

The prospect of surfing in the Olympics is looking probable as Japan gears itself for Olympic committee inspection. It is rumored that the event will run in a newly constructed wave pool in the bustling port city of Kobe. Due to the unpredictable nature of the ocean, the committee has stated in recent years, that if the event is to run, there must be an even playing field for the athletes to compete on. With recent improvements in wave pool technology, the event will be sure to be an exciting spectacle for a global audience. The Daily Froth spoke with Kanoa Igarashi, a Quiksilver team rider who calls Huntington Beach and Japan home.

“When I was last in Japan, I heard the Kobe pool was being built for the chance that the Olympics decided to include surfing. The wave will be similar to the pool in Dubai so it will give one good section to showcase aerial surfing.”

The Dubai wave pool was made famous after Dion Agius broke the internet with his self-produced web clip, “Electric Blue Heaven” as seen below. Shot by Joe G, the video showcases just what sort of maneuvers we would see if the Olympics choose to include surfing in the Olympics.

For the last 50 years, The International Surf Association or ISA has run its own version of what surfing in the Olympics would be like. A ten day event that features male and female surfers from 31 nations, the contest is an awe inspiring showcase of patriotism and cultural exchange. The Daily Froth was fortunate enough to speak with ISA President, Fernando Aguirre as he recounted for us his favorite aspect of the contest.

“Every year since its inception, the ISA has had a very special opening ceremony where a representative from each country, pours a jar of sand from his or her nation as a symbolic blending of culture through surf contests.”

This year, San Diego will play host to the ISA World Junior contest which features the best under 18 year old athletes from around the world. Hot off a win in the Open division, Costa Rica will be coming to town with all of the momentum. However, Australia’s a perennial threat and will no doubt be hungry for gold. Taking place from October 11th to the 18th in Oceanside, Fulcrum would love to extend the invitation to parents and ISPE students alike to visit the contest and see the future of our growing sport.
