Ever since Gidget hit the big screen in 1959, women have been enjoying the waves of Southern California with style, grace, and poise. And now 56 years later, women’s surfing is synonymous with the strength exhibited by Bethany Hamilton, the beauty of Alana Blanchard, and the athleticism of Sally Fitzgibbon. There has never been a better time then now for women to take up the art of surfing as it continues to evolve into an internationally recognized expression of courage and determination.

“If I have a daughter, of course I would encourage her to surf. Surfing teaches you to respect yourself, the environment, and those around you. It’s chalk full of life lessons that empower and emboldened young women. I’ve seen girls in our surf camp start off a summer timid and without confidence and have seen them transform into strong self assured women”

Imagine going for a surf alongside women with the same passion for waves as you do. Sound like a swell time? We at Fulcrum think so too. That’s why starting (early July), a group led by our highly qualified Fulcrum surf coaches will be gathering two times a week in Del Mar.
The first meeting each week will be an instructional style clinic where we will be going over technique, style, paddling, and positioning in the line up. The second weekly meeting will continue to evolve with the requests and inquiries formed from the Surf Sisters. Initial ideas include; pre surf yoga lessons on the grass, and other extracurricular activities not included in the monthly membership.

The goal for this group is to form life long friendships that revolve around a shared passion for the ocean. Because surfing has the ability to transcend all sorts of social barriers, we at Fulcrum think the Women of Waves is an excellent opportunity for women in the community to come together and learn in an environment that is comfortable and conducive for progression. Each month, a local standout female surfer will meet with the group to give a brief yet inspiring seminar before leading the Surf Sisters out into the water. These talks will empower women to continue to perceiver through each stage of surfing.

Ultimately, we hope that the Women of Waves will eventuate into a tight nit support group that would be interested in going on surf trips together. These excursions to the warm waters of Panama, Guatemala, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Tahiti would be an excellent opportunity to make life long memories, greatly improve abilities, and have an enriching cultural experience.
