The Daily Froth: Adventures Await!
In an article I wrote for an online surf magazine called “The Inertia,” I penned
“In these dismal days of job automation, a hankering surf habit and a case of wanderlust are the kiss of death. Long gone are the days of the drawn out surf trips planned around your boss’s mood. Rolling the dice in hopes that your vacation days and wave conditions agree have been replaced by our love of certainty and job security. Lucky for the modern age weekend warrior, the savviness of swell forecasting has made the “strike mission” a logistical solution to those who suffer from the doldrums of the nine to five”.
It was upon hearing about my photographer friend, Nick Liotta’s, last second jaunt to Indonesia that inspired the rambunctious rant. However as I read back on this a few months down the line, I am still stricken with the same attitude. Surf travel is difficult. You must plan around throngs of fellow surf junkies; find places where the swell aligns with proper accommodation, and all within your budget. It’s enough to worry your way out of going all together!
That is why this September; Fulcrum Travel’s media team will be doing an exploratory mission to Central America to scout out locations for upcoming Surf Camps. We will lay down the tracks so that when you have that precious time out of the office, the only decision that you’ll have to make is what surfboard to ride…
Sean Santiago, Pat Westman and I are going to be traveling through Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Guatemala and El Salvador to find the best waves for our clientele that are uncrowned and in close proximity to accommodation and grand food. Each day, we will document our adventure in order to get excitement levels high for you our treasured travel companions!
So in order to prep, I decided to do a blogging packing list that you can print out and save for our upcoming explorations. Don’t have some of these items? More will be available for purchase on our retail site here (Fulcrum SHOP)
Fulcrum’s Packing List:
[ ] Passport- make sure it’s current and has rooms for stamps!
[] Two Surfboards: Choice in surfboards will highly depend on level and location. If you are unsure of what equipment to use, please consult one of your surf coaches or take a private lesson prior to your journey! We will get you dialed in!
[ ] An extra set of fins- There is nothing worst then losing a set of fins and not having a backup. Fin Keys are a must as well, for Central America we recommend the John John TechFlex Fins by Futures.
[ ] Vertra Sunscreen- There is nothing worst then cracked and bleeding lips! Avoid the awful burning sensation by using Vertra’s tried and tested face stick formula. It doesn’t smear, lasts for hours, and will allow you to eat as much picante comida as possible!
[ ] Matuse 2103 wetsuit top- The water in Central America is warm, like a black sandy bath tub. However sometimes you’ll want a wind breaker for those crisp off shore mornings. Cure sunburns and your chilliness with this #geoprene wetsuit top!
[ ] Go Pro 3 and Accessories – There is nothing worst then getting the wave of your life and not having it caught on camera. Let your surf pals get waves of their own by filming yourself with a Go Pro and Go Surf mouth piece.
[ ] First Aid Kit- no explanation needed
[ ] Board Shorts or Bikinis- warm water apparel!
[ ] English to Spanish hand book- Just in case coaches Guan Carlos and Sean Santiago aren’t on your trip, it’s best to know a few phrases.
[ ] Open Mind- Traveling answers questions that you wouldn’t have originally asked. It’s best to stay optimistic, respect cultural differences, and be a good representation of wherever you’re coming from.
