The Daily Froth: ISPE to Surf Coach
I dare say that I have the greatest part time job in the world for a college student and I’ve had plenty of them ;( Journalist, barista, surf shop employee, sales representative, factory worker, shipping manager, you get the drift.) All these past occupations certainly had their merit; health benefits, discounts on surfboards, and free Spanglish lessons but what they all truly lacked was exactly what I get each day when I head to the beach as a Fulcrum Surf Coach. I was lucky, theirs a plethora of fully qualified candidates who seek employment from Fulcrum each summer, but my edge was that I had a background in competitive surfing, and for that matter being coached by some of the very best ( Ryan Simmons, USA Surf Team Head Coach). But for those lucky lads and ladies that are amongst the ranks of the ISPE, they find themselves knowing the Fulcrum handbook front and back by the time they graduate high school, V convenient isn’t it?!
So why stick with ISPE and through middle school and high school and become a full-fledged Fulcrum Surf Coach? Read further to find out curious comrade!
Flexibility:
Being a college student the inevitable comes up, maybe that’s me procrastinating but whatever! From my 8 months or so working with Dan, I’ve found that he is extremely understanding with the rigorous nature of the community college curriculum. While sometimes you’ve got to work when the waves are pumping, you’ll certainly be able to nab a few each time you work.
Working at the Fulcrum Summer Camps, coaches are expected to lead a round of light yoga for 10-15 minutes. This time to slow down, focus on breath and stretch, adds limberness to life!
Fulfillment:
One of our unofficial motto’s at Fulcrum is; “Spread stoke, it’s the Fulcrum way”. Stoke as defined by your humble wordsmith, refers to the pure, unadulterated joy that comes from riding waves. In the ISPE program, breakthroughs are seen daily, from a young surfer completing his or her first bottom turn, or a successful duck dive on a larger wave, it’s the most gratifying feeling helping a fellow surfer achieve their goals.
Travel:
By far the greatest opportunity Fulcrum Surf Coaches receive is the ability to travel with the company for work to locales such as Nicaragua, El Salvador, Tahiti, Panama, and with even more destinations on the horizon. While certainly an opportunity that is reserved for more seasoned staff, there’s no better feeling then being paid to travel and have some fun along the way.
The point I’m trying to get at here is that being a Fulcrum Surf Coach is a dream job that is highly obtainable for those who have spent time in ISPE, Summer Camp, and our Travel Camps. Because former students make the best coaches, a few years in ISPE will be a recent high school graduate in a great position for a fulfilling job with flexibility and the rare opportunity to be paid to travel and surf.
